A useful listing starts with a source. Here’s where Phoo’s information comes from, how updates work and where to find the source details in the app.
Where the data comes from
Most listings come from OpenStreetMap. We also use public toilet data from city or national authorities where the terms permit reuse, and corrections from people using Phoo. Each listing keeps its source information.
We use sources that permit reuse and keep their licence and attribution details with the data.
OpenStreetMap and the ODbL
OpenStreetMap data is © OpenStreetMap contributors and is used under the Open Database Licence. That licence requires attribution and that derived databases stay under the same terms. Attribution appears on every listing sourced from OpenStreetMap, on this page, and in the footer of every page on this site.
Some areas are refreshed through bounded requests to the OpenStreetMap API and the rest from periodic extracts we process ourselves, rather than querying the public service for the whole world. Both are spaced out to respect the services we rely on.
The details behind a listing
- The source it came from and the identifier it had there.
- The licence that governs it, and the attribution text to display.
- When it was imported, when it was last updated, and when it was last confirmed.
- A confidence level: official, recently confirmed, listed, or uncertain.
- Its full revision history, including whether each decision was automated.
How corrections are resolved
Reports are compared with independent reports from other visitors. Changes with enough supporting evidence are applied automatically. Reports about closures, access and safety need stronger confirmation.
Sending a report does not change the listing immediately. Reports without enough independent support eventually expire. We can review the history of automated decisions to check how corrections were handled.
What a listing can tell you
Listings show information from sources and visitors, with confirmation dates where available. Missing details are marked as unknown. Phoo does not certify cleanliness, safety or accessibility, and unknown access does not pass the accessible filter.
Corrections and removal requests
Report an incorrect detail in the app so it is linked to the right listing. If you operate a venue and want to request a correction or removal, or have a question about a data source, email us.
