Finding toilets at European train stations: check before you go
A practical way to find toilet, access, and station-facility information before a rail journey—without assuming every station is the same.
Major stations often have toilets. That is not the same as knowing where they are, whether they are open, whether they cost money, or whether they meet your access needs. Smaller stations may have fewer facilities, and station services can change. The most reliable approach is to check the specific station, not a country-wide rule of thumb.
Check the station, not just the journey
Look up both your departure station and any long connection on the operator’s own station page. In Great Britain, National Rail’s station finder includes toilets, accessible facilities, baby changing, step-free access, and assistance information. Deutsche Bahn likewise directs travellers to each station’s own page because services vary by station.
Search while you still have time to choose a different connection or arrive earlier. If a toilet is important to your journey, a connection with more time can be more useful than the fastest itinerary.
Look for the details that change the decision
“Toilets available” is only a starting point. Check the location in the station, opening hours, price, payment options, accessible-toilet information, and whether the route there is step-free. A station map is often the quickest way to answer the first and last of those questions.

Have a short fallback plan
